Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequent questions and answers about our Advanced Martial Arts Program.
Some describe sparring in jiu-jitsu as “Meditation” because they are only focused on the present moment at all times during their sessions. They are not thinking about their to-do list that day, only what they will do next in their jiu-jitsu “human chess match.”
For this reason, it is one of the most fun and mentally challenging workouts that can still be self-paced. We have seen individuals start from all fitness levels gain confidence and stamina on the mat through their jiu-jitsu practice.
No. At Gracie University, we are not a competition-focused gym. Our first priority for our martial arts students is that they learn the fundamentals of self-defense. What you need to do to survive against an aggressive, untrained opponent may be different than what you would need to learn for a sport jiu-jitsu tournament.
We support the individual jiu-jitsu journeys of each one of our students, regardless of whether they choose to test their skills in competition.
On average, it takes a minimum of 10 years of jiu-jitsu practice to become a Black Belt, but it can be shorter or longer depending on the frequency of training.
